permalink New network config

After being off-line for a few days over the winter solstice, I'm back with a new network configuration. If anything doesn't work like it used to, please drop me a line.

The network disconnect was prompted by a move into a new condominium building on December 23rd. The building is still under construction, and when the cable guy came by in the afternoon to do the installation, he couldn't get into the equipment room as all the workers had gone home. The wait until the next attempt, on December 28th, was a very long five days!

In the meanwhile, I set up the new network. The new condo has an ethernet outlet in every room, so I've taken advantage of this to optimise my network configuration. At the central panel I've located a new Netgear 'G' wireless router for notebook and PDA access, and wired access by my web server, an iMac, and a file server and backup server.

In my office area, the wall outlet now connects to an 8-port switch so I can plug in a Mac Mini, a PC, a network laser printer and a spare cable for any visitors with ethernet-equipped notebooks.

This new network configuration eliminates a Linksys router and a Network Everywhere 'B' wireless router. It's always nice to reduce the equipment count!
